ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS INDUCE GLUCOSE INTOLERANCE BY ALTERING THE BACTERIA IN YOUR GUT:

It appears as though whether or not you get glucose intolerance from artificial sweeteners depends on what type of bacteria you have in your gut.

This offers a potential explanation for the conflicting results of previous studies, some of which demonstrated that artificial sweeteners induce diabetes and obesity at greater rates than equal amounts of sugar, and others that showed no association.

More importantly, it offers a potential solution: when the researchers transferred the gut bacteria from those subjects who did not get glucose intolerance from artificial sweeteners to those who did, the glucose intolerance corrected itself.

That’s the power of bacteriotherapy, folks!

Many health experts are commenting on this series of studies, and most of them have found it quite compelling. Here’s NPR’s interview with several health experts (including Dr. Martin Blaser!) on their interpretation of the results.
