Scientists have found a new way to tell who’s at risk of having a premature baby, by checking the bacterial community that lives in mom’s reproductive tract.

Pregnant women who go into preterm labor harbor a different pattern of bacteria than other moms-to-be. One specific finding demonstrated that at-risk mothers have low levels of lactobacillus bacteria, a family of bacteria long thought important for vaginal health.
