SCIENTISTS GATHER TO DISCUSS CONNECTIONS BETWEEN GUT MICROBIOME AND BRAIN DISORDERS:

Increasing evidence suggests that our gut microbiome is able to regulate brain processes and trigger neurological disorders, such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Scientists from around the world discussed these themes at the recent Congress of the European Academy of Neurology in Copenhagen, Denmark.

It may seemed far-fetched to think that the microbiome could be responsible for processes outside the digestive tract, yet the scientific community keeps uncovering further amazing details. It has been proven that the gut and the brain communicate with each other via several routes including the vagus nerve, the immune system, the enteric nervous system, or by way of microbial metabolic processes.

From regulating behavior to fundamental brain processes, the gut microbiome appears to play a crucial role.

Experimental models on the origin of autoimmunity suggest that the gut microbiome plays an important role in this context, too.
